50th-Anniversary Special Edition
For 50 years, the Chevrolet Corvette has been carefully crafted from a precise blend of power, performance, style and comfort. As it celebrates five colorful decades in the automotive business in 2003, Chevrolet’s flagship continues its reign as one of GM’s technology and style bellwethers.
For 2003, Corvette unveils a 50th Anniversary Special Edition, more standard equipment on the coupe and convertible models, and Magnetic Selective Ride Control, the industry’s fastest and most powerful real time damping suspension.
Corvette’s 50th-Anniversary color is one-year-only Anniversary Red. a burgundy red with Xirallic aluminum-oxide flakes floating under a tinted clear-coat and complemented by special Shale interior trim with anniversary badges and cockpit embroidery. All 50th-Anniversary models of which as many as 10,000 will be built if demanded along with all 2003 hatches and convertibles optioned with the F55 Magnetic Selective Ride Control suspension.
A golden tribute
The 50th Anniversary Edition, available only during the 2003 model year on coupe and convertible models, is a tribute to a half-century of automotive leadership. It includes special 50th Anniversary Red exterior paint, specific badging, unique Shale interior including color coordinated instrument panel and console, and champagne-painted anniversary wheels with special emblems. It also features embroidered badges on the seats and floormats, padded door armrests and grips and a Shale convertible top. The Anniversary Edition includes the standard Corvette LS1 engine, as well as Magnetic Selective Ride Control. A special 50th Anniversary Edition of the 2003 Corvette was the Official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 last May, marking the fifth time that a Corvette has paced the race.
Magnetic Selective Ride Control
New on the Corvette for 2003, Magnetic Selective Ride Control uses a revolutionary damper design that controls wheel and body motion with Magneto-Rheological fluid in the shocks. By controlling the current to an electromagnetic coil inside the piston of the damper, the MR fluid’s consistency can be changed, resulting in continuously variable real time damping. As a result, drivers feel a greater sense of security, a quieter, flatter ride and more precise, responsive handling, particularly during sudden, high-speed maneuvers.
The system isolates and smoothes the action of each tire, resulting in less bouncing, vibration and noise. On bumpy or slick surfaces, the system integrates with traction control to assure maximum stability. It also works with ABS to keep the vehicle balanced and poised. It is the only system without electro-mechanical values and no small moving parts. It consists of MR fluid-based, monotube shock absorbers, a sensor set and on-board controller.
Magnetic Selective Ride Control is available on Corvette coupe and convertible models for 2003. It is included with the 50th Anniversary Edition.
More standard equipment
Corvette adds new standard equipment on coupe and convertible models for 2003, including foglamps, sport seats, power passenger seat, dual zone auto HVAC (on coupe and convertible), and a parcel net and luggage shade on coupe.
For those who bring their little ones along for the ride, the 2003 Corvette includes CRAS child seat hooks on the passenger seat to allow easier child seat connection. The Corvette’s airbag-off switch must be used to disable the passenger-side airbag when using child seats in the vehicle.
During 2003 only, all Corvettes feature a special 50th anniversary emblem on the front and rear. The emblem is silver and features the number “50” with the signature cross-flag design.

50th-Anniversary models arrived at dealerships in August 2002, prices to start at about $50,000 and convertibles to be about $56,000, or roughly $2000 more than fully loaded non-Anniversary models

Corvette to Pace Indianapolis 500
As Part of 50th Anniversary Celebration, Chevrolet’s Corvette, an international performance icon, was named Official Pace Car for the 86th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 26, 2002.
Chevrolet will pace the Indy 500 a record 13th time, and Corvette will perform the pace car duties for the fifth time since 1978 – the most pace car appearances by a single brand.
In addition to the 2003 Corvette pace car and 2002 Corvette and Camaro track and festival cars, an additional sixty-six 2002 Corvettes were used as part of the Indy 500 festivities. Thirty-three Millennium Yellow and thirty-three Quicksilver Corvette convertibles decorated with the 2002 Indy 500 logo and American flags were used during the pre-race parade laps to honor our veterans. These cars were part of a dealer promotion and were distributed to Chevy dealers around the North Central region to be sold to the public after the race.
Production Corvette incorporates advanced technology
The Corvette that provides the platform for the Indy 500 Pace Car is equipped with a standard 5.7-liter LS1 V8 engine that produces 350 horsepower in production trim. Corvette incorporates advanced technology such as hydroformed frame rails, Active Handling System, driver-selectable suspension modes and optional Head-Up Display.

Chevrolet returns to Indy car compeititon with all-new Chevy Indy V8 engine
The 86th running of the Indianapolis 500-mile race will also mark the return of Chevrolet to the most hallowed ground in American motorsports. Chevrolet will compete in the Indy 500 for the first time since 1993 with the all-new Chevy Indy V8 racing engine. Chevrolet won 86 Indy car races, including six Indianapolis 500 victories, and five series championships in 1986-93.
“We are proud that Corvette has been named Official Pace Car of the 86th Indianapolis 500,” said Kurt Ritter, Chevrolet general manager. “The excitement that builds at Indianapolis Motor Speedway from opening day until the checkered flag falls mirrors the excitement that is building around Corvette’s 50th anniversary.
“Chevrolet’s racing heritage began with company co-founder Louis Chevrolet, who gained international fame as an engineer and race car driver,” Ritter noted. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the bronze statue of Louis Chevrolet that stands outside the Hall of Fame Museum was smiling at the news about Corvette and Chevy’s return to the Brickyard.”
