(MAHWAH, N.J.) November 4, 2013 ‑ The Jaguar XF, a sporting mid‑size luxury sedan with a seductive design, continues its powerful evolution, adding a new

XFR‑S ultra‑performance model with a 550hp supercharged V8 and eight‑speed Quickshift automatic transmission engine for 2014.

Availability of this special model is limited with no more than 100 units expected to be sold for 2014. The 340hp supercharged 3‑liter V6 and 240hp 2‑liter turbocharged I4 engine introduced for 2013 continue, with the V6 exclusively offering the option of the Jaguar Instinctive All Wheel Drive™ system3. The supercharged V8 engine continues in the 2014 XF, with 470hp in the XF Supercharged and a 510hp version in the XFR. The V6 and V8 engines feature the Intelligent Stop/Start system to optimize fuel efficiency. All 2014 XF engines feature a standard eight‑speed automatic transmission.

For all 2014 XF models, the infotainment system offerings include a premium audio system by Meridian™, the renowned British maker of high‑end home audio components and speakers. Two versions are offered, both employing proprietary Meridian™ technology that produces powerful sound with lower sound distortion than systems of similar output.

Striking Design with Long Sport Sedan Heritage

The XF introduced a new design language for Jaguar, and since a 2012 redesign has been more closely aligned with the new‑generation XJ sedan. The Jaguar XF draws on a deep heritage of performance‑oriented models that extends back to what is arguably the true forbear of modern sports sedans, the 1959 Jaguar Mk. II.

The XF sedan’s design combines the visual impact of a coupe profile with the practical nature that has always defined Jaguar sedans. The 510hp XFR gets its own unique design detailing, including larger lower grilles that underscore the car’s formidable performance capability. Also drawing from the Jaguar sport sedan heritage, the XF offers a highly practical package, including a large 17.7 cubic‑foot trunk.

Instinctive All Wheel Drive™ System

The Jaguar Instinctive All Wheel Drive™ system, which debuted for the 2013 model year, has proven popular with XF customers. The system employs an active power transfer control technology that adds the benefit of enhanced all‑season traction while retaining the sporty agility and steering feel of the rear‑wheel drive version. Instinctive All Wheel Drive is exclusively paired with the supercharged 3‑liter V63.

In dry‑road conditions, the Jaguar Instinctive All Wheel Drive system normally sends most torque to the rear wheels to preserve the agile driving feel and response of a rear‑wheel drive XF. An active electronically controlled system, Jaguar Instinctive All Wheel Drive constantly monitors grip levels, steering and throttle inputs. Using special control algorithms, the system can proactively predict rear‑tire slip. It can transfer up to 50 percent of the torque to the front wheels when needed, such as in slippery conditions, pre‑empting potential rear‑wheel slip.

The Jaguar Instinctive AWD™ system offers other benefits. When accelerating from a stop, the system applies “pre‑load” torque to the front wheels to help optimize traction. Once underway, if no slip of the rear wheels is detected, Jaguar Instinctive All Wheel Drive seamlessly switches to its rear‑biased configuration.

When selecting “Winter Mode” using the Jaguar Drive Control, the vehicle will optimize its systems for slippery conditions3. Winter mode also pre‑loads more torque to the front wheels at start‑up and defaults to a 30:70 torque share between front and rear to maximize traction on slippery surfaces. Control is further bolstered by the full integration of the AWD control with Dynamic Stability Control and ABS, which can apply braking to individual wheels as a second measure against wheel slip and also apportion torque side‑to‑side.

Jaguar Instinctive All Wheel Drive™ System Components

In the Jaguar XF 3.0 AWD model, a transfer case connected to the rear of the eight‑speed automatic transmission houses a multi‑plate wet clutch, which controls power transfer via a driveshaft to the front differential. The Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) is the electronic control unit that monitors grip levels and driver inputs, and then signals the transfer clutch to apportion the torque appropriately3.

To package the Instinctive AWD™ system as efficiently as possible and retain a low center of gravity, the front halfshafts run through the engine oil pan. Special acoustic materials in the transmission tunnel ensure refinement comparable to the rear‑wheel drive model. Jaguar engineers spent 18 months testing the new Instinctive All Wheel Drive system in a variety of conditions, including the frozen lakes and split‑friction coefficient surfaces of the Jaguar Land Rover development facility in northern Sweden.

Turbocharged 2‑liter

Standard for the 2014 Jaguar XF 2.0, the turbocharged 2‑liter 4‑cylinder engine combines low‑inertia turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable timing of both the intake and exhaust camshafts to produce 240hp at 5,500 rpm.

The 2‑liter engine offers a highly flexible powerband, exemplified by a torque peak of 251 lb.‑ft. that is sustained from 2,000‑4,000 rpm. At just 304lbs., the compact, all‑aluminum engine is exceptionally light.

A low‑inertia turbocharger provides quick, no‑lag response. A lightweight thin walled exhaust manifold integrates the turbo housing to reduce the engine warm‑up period and catalyst light‑off time. Twin balancer shafts, active engine mounts, an acoustic engine cover, and the use of additional sound insulation ensure smooth, quiet operation at all engine speeds. Specialized coatings on the piston rings and tappets are among the measures that reduce internal friction.

The 2014 Jaguar XF 2.0T can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds5. The combination of generous low‑end and mid‑range torque, combined with the wide ratio spread of the Jaguar‑tuned ZF® eight‑speed automatic transmission, endows the XF with a sporty character while yielding highly responsive performance in everyday driving situations.

Supercharged V6

The 3‑liter supercharged V6 engine that powers the XF 3.0 models provides performance comparable to the naturally aspirated 5‑liter V8 it replaced in the 2013 model year, but with better fuel efficiency. In the XF, the supercharged V6 produces 340hp at 6,500 rpm and can accelerate the rear‑wheel drive model from zero to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds (6.1 for AWD)5. More telling about the engine’s flexibility in everyday driving is the broad torque curve, with the peak of 332 lb.‑ft. available from 3,500‑5,000 rpm.

Fuel economy ratings of EPA 18 mpg city / 28 mpg highway for the 2014 XF 3.0 RWD compare to 16/23 for the previous 5‑liter V8 model2. The supercharged V6 has a 16,000‑mile or 12‑month service interval, adding value to the ownership experience6.

Jaguar engineered its DOHC 3‑liter supercharged V6 on the same all‑aluminum architecture as the brand’s supercharged 5‑liter V8. As in the V8, the lightweight die‑cast aluminum block is reinforced with cross‑bolted main bearing caps to increase rigidity and therefore refinement. A system of counter‑rotating front and rear balancer weights help give the new supercharged V6 the smoothness and refinement characteristics of the V8 on which it is based.

Like the Jaguar supercharged V8, the V6 combines high compression, direct fuel injection, dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT) and an engine‑driven supercharger to deliver performance of a larger‑displacement engine. A Roots‑type twin vortex supercharger is mounted in the ‘V’ of the engine, and a water‑cooled intercooler reduces the temperature of the intake air to optimize power and efficiency.

The Intelligent Stop/Start system uses a twin solenoid starter, enabling the system to restart the engine in less time than it takes for the driver’s foot to move from the brake pedal to the accelerator. There is also a strategy for engine stop‑start “change of mind” scenarios. As the engine is shutting down, but before it has completely stopped, it is able to restart by rapidly injecting fuel into the cylinders.

Thrilling Supercharged V8 Performance

The 2014 Jaguar XF Supercharged V8 and the Jaguar XFR occupy the higher end of the XF line, which is now topped by the limited‑production XFR‑S. Each is powered by different versions of the supercharged

5‑liter V8. In the XF Supercharged, the engine delivers 470hp, with 424 lb.‑ft. of peak torque available from 2,000‑5,500 rpm. The XFR increases this to 510hp and 461 lb.‑ft. of peak torque, the latter covering the

2,500‑5,500 rpm range. Both models have a limited top track speed of 155 mph, which can be raised to 174 mph in the XFR with the optional Performance Pack5. This option also includes the Sport Exhaust and an array of chassis and brake components from the XFR‑S.

The XFR can accelerate from zero‑to‑60 mph in just 4.7 seconds5. More relevant in everyday driving, and an excellent indicator of the vehicle’s great flexibility, is its 1.9‑second 50‑70 mph acceleration performance5.

Both of these high‑end XF models feature standard 20‑inch alloy wheels in a staggered array: 8.5‑inches wide in front with 225/35ZR20 summer tires and 9.5‑inches in the rear with 285/30ZR20 summer tires. Both models also come equipped with larger brakes than the other XF models and feature a unique hood carrying bold and distinctive louvers. Both models are equipped with the Adaptive Dynamics suspension and Active Differential Control3 enhancing the sports driving characteristic of the vehicle.

In addition to its greater power, the XFR differs from the XF Supercharged with its functional aero‑ enhanced body package, 18‑way driver and 14‑way passenger power sport seats embossed with the “R” logo and a standard Meridian™ 825W premium surround sound system. The unique front‑end XFR design features a unique lower grille with black‑finished mesh, plus larger outboard air intakes with chrome surround and black‑finished mesh with chrome surrounds front grille. Front and rear “R” badges and four large, bright‑finished tailpipes help make the XFR instantly recognizable.

The XFR cabin features a full soft grain leather interior as standard, with five seat and lower environment color choices ‑ Warm Charcoal with a choice of Ivory contrast stitch or no contrast stitch, Warm Charcoal/Red, Warm Charcoal/London Tan, and Ivory. The speedometer and tachometer have the unique sporting signature of red dial pointers and carry the “Supercharged” motif.

New Limited‑Production XFR‑S

Introduced as a late 2013MY, The XFR‑S is the new performance flagship of the XF line. This is the second model in the ultra‑high performance R‑S range from Jaguar, following the XKR‑S that was introduced for 2012. The XFR‑S is powered by the same 5‑liter supercharged V8 as the XKR‑S, producing 550hp and 502 lb.‑ft. of torque. No more than 100 units are expected to be offered for the U.S. for the 2014 model year. Equipped with substantial chassis upgrades and aerodynamic body enhancements over the XFR, the XFR‑S can achieve an electronically limited maximum track speed of 186 mph (300 km/h)5 . The XFR‑S will sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds (0‑100 km/h in 4.6 seconds)5.

Remarkably, fuel economy for the XFR‑S is equal to the XFR model with an EPA 23 mpg highway2. No gas‑guzzler tax applies. The deft balance of ultra‑high performance and efficiency owes much to the ZF®eight‑speed transmission with Quickshift functionality that enables optimal acceleration and heightens the driving experience.

The XFR‑S is immediately recognizable by its aerodynamic enhancements, which make extensive use of carbon fiber components. In addition to giving the XFR‑S an assertive appearance, the aero package reduces lift by 68 percent to enhance handling agility.

In addition, the XFR‑S incorporates comprehensive suspension upgrades to maximize response, with lateral stiffness increases of up to 30 percent. The Electronic Active Differential and Dynamic Stability Control systems from the XFR have been recalibrated to enhance handling characteristics, particularly for track driving activities3. New, wider, 20‑inch ‘Varuna’ forged alloy wheels and specially developed tires maximize grip.

As the flagship of the XF line, the 2014 XFR‑S features exclusive interior appointments, including specials sport seats and carbon leather with contrasting highlight micro‑piping and stitching. The Meridian 825W, 18‑speaker surround‑sound system is standard.

Advanced Chassis Dynamics

The XF driver can select how the engine and transmission respond using the JaguarDrive Control™, which offers three modes: Normal, for comfortable, leisurely driving; Dynamic, for a more sporting and responsive character, and Winter, for greater capability in low‑grip conditions3. Each mode changes the characteristics of engine response, transmission shifts, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) intervention, and on XF Supercharged and XFR and XFR‑S, Adaptive Dynamics tuning and Active Differential Control. In Dynamic mode, gearshift points are raised, and the suspension stiffens.

Models with the supercharged V8 come equipped with the Adaptive Dynamics active damping system that automatically tailors damper settings to suit both road conditions and the way the car is being driven, and Active Differential Control, which helps to improve acceleration while enhancing cornering ability3. The clutch‑type differential transmits torque to the wheel with the most traction. This proactive system differs fundamentally from conventional traction control, which uses the brakes reactively to counteract slip.

Jaguar Luxury

The combination of an aluminum dashboard, satin or gloss wood veneers, tailored instrument and door panels with twin‑needle stitching as standard, plus Phosphor Blue halo illumination and interior mood lighting, give the XF interior a decidedly sporty ambience.

The JaguarDrive Selector™ transmission interface is a unique brand identifier. The beautiful cast alloy Selector has already gained recognition for its part in the distinctive XF “driver handshake,” a sequence in which the illuminated stop/start button pulsates until pressed, at which point the JaguarDrive Selector™ rises from the console and the dashboard vents silently rotate to their open position.

Leather seating and multi‑way adjustable power seats are standard on all XF models. The XF and XF 3.0 models come standard with three‑stage heated front seats, a distinction from some competitors that make heated front seats an extra‑cost option. The Cold Pack adds a heated steering wheel and heated windshield. Heated and cooled active‑ventilated front seats are standard on the XF Supercharged, XFR and XFR‑S and available for the other models in the Portfolio Pack.

Across the XF line, the customer can personalize the car with optional amenities and a wide choice of exterior and interior finishes. The XF Premium Pack adds the navigation system, disc player, HD Radio™, SiriusXM Satellite Radio™ (with three‑month trial subscription), 380W Meridian™ premium audio system, rear camera parking aid and front parking aid3.  This package gains Jaguar Voice Control and keyless entry for 2014. The rear camera parking aid provides a clear view of the area behind the car on the color touch‑screen while reversing, and the touch‑screen displays guidance lines that move according to steering wheel angle to help the driver guide the car in reverse3.

A new Vision Pack is introduced at 2014MY, combining adaptive front lights that pivot into the corners as the car is steered, intelligent high beam that switches headlamps from high to low depending on incoming traffic, blind spot monitor and Electrochromic exterior mirrors.

The XF Portfolio Pack adds soft‑grain leather with contrast stitching, 16‑way active‑ventilated heated and cooled front seats with leatherette seat back map pockets, and it also introduces a luxurious Suedecloth premium headlining. The package’s premium deep‑pile carpet mats feature contrast edging and embroidered logos.

The XF Supercharged and XFR models include the contents of all the above option Packs, along with exclusive features and options.

Meridian™ Premium Audio Systems

The 2014 Jaguar XF and XF 3.0 models come standard with a 250W Jaguar premium audio system and offer a choice between two new premium audio systems from Meridian™, the renowned British maker of high‑end home audio equipment and speakers. The Premium Package adds a Meridian™ 380W system, which comes standard in the XF Supercharged model. This can be further upgraded to an optional Meridian™ 825W surround system that is standard in the XFR and XFR‑S.

Meridian™ technology emphasizes ultra‑low distortion, natural detail and realism. For example, a total harmonic distortion (THD) rating of less than 1 percent is considered to be high fidelity and inaudible to the human ear; the Jaguar XF’s Meridian™ systems have a THD of just 0.2 percent. That is one reason, along with Meridian’s™ proprietary digital signal processing, that the 380W system produces output on par with the 600W system used previously. The 825W system produces the equivalent output of the 1,200W system previously used in the 2012 XF, but with less power consumption.

The Meridian™ 380W premium sound system comes with AM/FM receiver, a single‑slot CD/DVD player, MP3 disc compatibility,  Radio Data system, HD Radio™ and a SiriusXM Satellite Radio™ receiver (with three‑month trial subscription). In addition, the Media Hub provides flexible connectivity through two USB ports, Bluetooth® v2.0 audio streaming and an auxiliary input jack. Gracenote provides artist and track recognition.

Tuned by Meridian™ for the Jaguar XF interior, the 380W audio system uses 12 speakers including one subwoofer, separate digital amplifier and Audyssey MultEQ sound equalization technology. The 825W version is a 7.1‑channel system that plays through 17 speakers, including one subwoofer. The Meridian™ Trifield™

surround mode places each occupant in the center of the sound field. Cabin Correction and Dynamic Volume Control maintain consistent volume level by monitoring extraneous noise levels and continually minimizing resonances.

Navigation

The navigation system features Dynamic Zoom, which automatically magnifies the image when the car is approaching an intersection or highway interchange4. The Visual Lane Guidance feature now provides additional details at intersections, and the Road Sign Board feature displays overhead sign information in split‑screen view.

A “My POI” feature adds greater capability and convenience to the Points of Interest function, including easier access to POI’s from the main menu screen and the ability to download, import and edit POI lists from a personal computer into the navigation system via USB. A single/dual map view allows route comparisons, and soft‑touch buttons on the periphery of the screen extend the map viewing mode functionality.

Jaguar Driver Assist Features

The comprehensive set of driver assist technologies in the Jaguar XF include Anti‑lock Braking (ABS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC). Emergency Brake Assist is standard, and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is available as an option3. On models equipped with the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), the Advanced Emergency Brake Assist uses the ACC radar to calculate distance from and closing speed to the vehicle ahead and pre‑charges the brake‑line pressure to help reduce speed if a collision is predicted, as well as giving an audible warning to the driver.3

The 2014 XF Saloon and Sportbrake with Jaguar’s ECO2 powertrain represent a compelling combination of elegance and real-world efficiency, helping to reduce the tax burdens on drivers and fleet managers alike while still retaining the luxury and refinement already associated with the XF range. The 2.2-litre four-cylinder ECO2 engine is offered in combination with Jaguar’s Intelligent Stop-Start system and an eight-speed gearbox, enabling the MY14 XF to deliver the performance and driver appeal expected of a Jaguar along with reduced emissions and greatly improved fuel consumption.

ECO2 turbo diesel engine

Jaguar’s new four-cylinder, 2.2-litre diesel 163PS ECO2 engine, which works in combination with an eight-speed automatic transmission, has new larger Exhaust Gas Recirculation valves and a revised cooling assembly which combine to reduce emissions figures by a further 6g/km of CO2 over the 2013 Jaguar XF. The new car is capable of achieving 57.7mpg with a CO2 figure of just 129g/km. An appealing proposition to company car drivers and fleet managers, this XF represents all the benefits of driving a Jaguar along with greater fuel economy and reduced emissions.

TSS/Stop-Start system

The low emissions produced by the ECO2 engine are helped further by Jaguar’s Stop-Start system, which uses a Twin Solenoid Starter (TSS) to shut down the engine when the car comes to a halt and restarting it in less time than it takes for the driver’s foot to move from the brake to the accelerator. The system also offers ‘change of mind’ functionality, enabling the engine to quickly restart even during its rundown phase to allow the driver to, for example, exploit a gap in traffic at a junction. An illuminated ‘ECO’ symbol appears on the Instrument Panel when the engine has been stopped by the system. Stop-Start can be turned off manually, but it will automatically be turned on again for the vehicle’s next journey with every ignition cycle. The system operates in all modes apart from Reverse.

The MY14 XF has a secondary battery fitted specifically for engine re-starting, meaning that all the normal car systems – such as the entertainment system, the ventilation and lights – continue to receive power from the standard car battery and are unaffected by the re-start. In addition, a complex control system ensures that the Stop/Start operation only occurs when the car does not require the engine for other functions.

The MY14 Jaguar XF sees the introduction of extended navigation system features that provide more focused and intuitive mapping as well as iGO primo, which adds a range of comprehensive address search options, a smart keyboard and one-way road visualisation, among a host of additional benefits.

 

JAGUAR XF SPORTBRAKE TAKES CLASS HONOURS AT TOW CAR AWARDS 2013

(Whitley, Coventry, June 07 2013). The Jaguar XF Sportbrake has taken class honours in the Tow Car Awards 2013.

Competing against several premium and SUV competitors in the highly competitive 1725-1899kg category, the Jaguar XF Sportbrake 3.0 V6 Diesel Premium Luxury was named best-in-class, taking up the mantle of the Jaguar XF 2.2D saloon which won the same category last year and which was also named overall winner of the Tow Car Awards 2012.

Now in its seventh year, the 2013 Tow Car Awards saw a total of 46 vehicles assessed at the MIRA Proving Ground by an expert panel of judges including the editor of Practical Caravan magazine; the tow car editor of Practical Caravan; the deputy road test editor of What Car? and the technical department at The Camping and Caravanning Club.
