2014 Peugeot 308 Hatchback

FUEL ECONOMY RECORD FOR THE PEUGEOT 308 AND THE NEW PURETECH THREE-CYLINDER TURBOCHARGED PETROL ENGINE

  • Award-winning new PEUGEOT 308 takes the production car fuel economy record to a new high
  • New PureTech 3-cylinder e-THP petrol engine demonstrates efficiency and class-leading capability
  • The 308 is also equipped with the sector-leading BlueHDi diesel engine with CO2 from just 82g/km

The PEUGEOT 308, recently awarded European Car of the Year 2014, completes its range with the arrival of the new PureTech 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, producing 130bhp. In official witnessed tests, it has been shown to achieve new records for fuel economy: 99.1mpg and 1124.7 miles on a full tank of fuel.

This performance was achieved at the Almeria circuit in Spain, officially witnessed by the authority UTAC (Union Technique de l’Automobile, Motocycle et Cycle). A PEUGEOT 308 Hatchback, specified with the new PureTech 1.2-litre e-THP 130 turbo petrol engine with a manual six-speed gearbox, was driven for over 32 hours to consume the 51.4-litre contents of its fuel tank. In so doing, the PEUGEOT 308 set a new record for fuel economy and distance driven on a single tank of fuel and to achieve this, several drivers took part in the driving such was the time and distance covered.

This performance was achieved with a standard production model and therefore allows the PEUGEOT 308 1.2-litre THP 130 to become the benchmark for its sector for most economical vehicle with a petrol engine. The new engine boasts a new compact design, is powerful and highly-efficiency utilising the latest technology.  This technology includes high-pressure direct injection (200 bar) of the fuel system and a new generation high performance turbocharger (turning at 240,000 rev/min), representing a real technological breakthrough. When specified in the new 308 – the most compact and lightest car in its segment – this engine can fully express its dynamism and exceptional fuel economy.

The new 308 is also available with a benchmark BlueHDi 1.6-litre diesel engine with 120bhp and a Combined Drive Cycle fuel economy of 91.1 mpg and lowest CO2 sector emissions of just 82g/km, so with the PEUGEOT 308 demonstrates the highest quality of its design and overall capability. Available in vehicles produced from the end of March, the PEUGEOT 308 1.2-litre e-THP 130 has a Combined Drive Cycle fuel economy of 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 107g/km. The new 308 is available with a choice of five petrol engines (82 to 156bhp) and five diesel engines (92 to 150bhp) and the new PureTech turbo petrol engines are being made available on the 208 Hatchback and 2008 Crossover with the e-THP 110 in the coming weeks.

NEW PEUGEOT 308 AND THE ‘EMP2’ CHASSIS: A FOUNDATION FOR INNOVATION AND QUALITY

  • b0d4a7df-9780-48ff-bb72-1f7384e41e1fThe New 308 is a dynamic tour-de-force, made possible by its outstanding ‘EMP 2’ chassis
  • Design strength makes it possible to be much lighter, thus more efficient
  • Production techniques and build-quality enable size optimisation and future design adaptability

View the New Peugeot 308 from any angle, inside or out, and its pure and contemporary styling is impossible to avoid. But almost every aspect of the hatchback’s audacious design – as well as its compact dimensions, class-leading environmental credentials, innovative PEUGEOT i-Cockpit cabin layout and dynamic drive – can be traced back to one thing.

That vital component is the chassis on which the New 308 is built, the utilisation of its innovative ‘Efficient Modular Platform 2’ (EMP2). It’s the first new Peugeot to benefit from this advanced architecture, a number of designs of which were part of a staggering 116 patented technologies, as were the composite tailgate and rear-floor section panel.

The impact of the EMP2 is most obvious on the overall dimensions of the New Peugeot 308. At 4.25 metres from bumper to bumper, it’s 3cm shorter than the outgoing model. Yet the front overhang has been reduced by a massive 6.3cm, creating a ‘wheel in each corner’ profile and more usable space for front seat occupants and their luggage.

At 420 litres with the rear seats up, the boot of the New 308 is the largest in the segment. In addition, the maximum and minimum adjustability of the driver’s seat has been increased, yet space for rear passengers has been maintained at previous levels. Far from being an impossible magic trick, it’s all due to the innovative EMP2 chassis.

The platform has also been engineered so the New 308 can be a lower and wider vehicle than ever before. The car’s roofline is 40mm closer to the ground than on the predecessor model, and with an increase in track width the centre of gravity is 2mm lower.

The EMP2 chassis has been designed to better accommodate many of the car’s bolt-on components. For example, the right-hand drive pedal box is now a perfect replica of the left-hand drive layout. That’s because the air-conditioning unit behind the dashboard has been repositioned to a more central location when compared with the previous generation car. Such an improvement has only been possible because of the attention to detail which has gone into creating the EMP2 architecture.

One of the features which make the New 308 so desirable is its striking and contemporary PEUGEOT i-Cockpit premium interior. Driver-focused like nothing else in the segment, it offers one of the most technically advanced touch-screen infotainment systems on any new car. The EMP2 platform provides the underpinnings on which everything else is built.

For the future owner of the New 308, the benefits of the EMP2 chassis are obvious. Due to advanced materials and state-of-the-art manufacturing processes – including flexible rolling, hot stamping and laser welding – the car is on average 140kg lighter than the outgoing model.

Coupled with advanced engines and powertrains, the result is segment-leading environmental performance. Depending on the model selected, fuel economy is as high as 91.1mpg with CO2 emissions as low as 82g/km.

The New Peugeot 308 is also an exceptional car to drive, a superbly comfortable place to spend time, and is packed with sophisticated safety and convenience technology. And it’s all because of Peugeot’s EMP2 chassis underpinning the strength of the car.

Needless to say, there is no doubt it will become the foundation for numerous future Peugeot models, each able to offer exceptional eco-motoring, premium features, a sophisticated interior and outstanding handling.

TIMELESS ELEGANCE, SUPERB BUILD QUALITY,

STRONG DESIRABILITY AND EXCELLENT OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY ALL SUPPORT STRONG RESIDUAL VALUES

  • New 308 residual values up nine percentage points compared with previous model
  • Now ahead of several key rivals and segment average
  • Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) values make the New 308 cheaper to run than class leaders
  • Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) costs down
  • Number of scheduled services reduced from four to three for the popular 1.6 HDi engine
  • Figures will support Fleet and Corporate customer confidence

Residual Values projected for the New Peugeot 308 will be among the highest in the segment, based on figures released by industry expert CAP Monitor.

The data for September 2013 shows that Peugeot has made a huge leap forward, with values which are higher than several key rivals and the segment average. On average, RVs are 9.3 percentage points higher than for the outgoing 308.

For diesel models, the New 308 Active Blue 1.6-litre HDi 120 has an RV of 34.40%. That’s against a segment average of 32.69% and will give the car a value after three years of £6,550. For petrol cars, the New 308 Active 1.2-litre e-THP 130 has an RV of 31.72%. That’s against a segment average of 28.10% and will give the car a projected value of £5,750.

CAP’s forecasts are based on cars which are three-years old with 60,000 miles.

Whole Life Cost (WLC)

Service, Maintenance and Repair (SMR) projected costs have also benefited. Service intervals across the range have risen from 12,500 to 16,000 miles. On a typical three-year / 60,000 mile contract the number of services drops from four to three.

The New 308 will be available from launch with a wide selection of petrol and diesel engines. The most appealing for business drivers will be those powered by the 1.6-litre HDi 115 engine, with a CO2 output of just 95g/km.  With a Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) value of 13%, a 40% tax payer would contribute just £81 per month, a figure that’s again lower than several key rivals.

Bob Grant, Peugeot’s Whole Life Cost Manager, explains: “It’s a significant saving over a 36-month contract and it also has a knock-on benefit for employers who will see a reduction in Employer’s National Insurance contributions on the vehicle benefit.”  In this example, that cost would be £334 in Year 1, compared with £376 for an equivalent competitors model.

Another attractive proposition are the models with the new e-HDi 120bhp BlueHDi engine, with best-in-class emissions of just 82g/km and fuel economy at 91.1mpg. Also the new 2.0-litre HDi 150bhp, which has expected emissions of only 103g/km – exceptionally low for an engine of that capacity, and will also be available mated to a fully automatic transmission with 111g/km emissions.

Business users doing lower mileage are also well served by Peugeot’s latest developments in petrol engine technology. From launch there will be a 1.2-litre VTi 82bhp with 114g/km, plus the 1.6-litre power-unit with the choice of 125 or 156bhp.  The most likely popular choice however will fall to the new 1.2-litre e-THP three-cylinder turbocharged unit, which is a superb performer, quiet and refined, with expected emissions from just 104g/km.

“The New 308 is the most competitive car we have ever launched because it combines so many virtues and a class-leading CO2 position,” added Bob Grant. “Weight reduction spearheaded by the new EMP2 chassis, many other weight-savings thanks to particular attention-to-detail features, improved aerodynamics and engine efficiencies are just some of the many highlights that have all contributed to this advantageous position. These competitive advancements and the overall attractive product design and high quality are the great influencers of the success of our Benefit-In-Kind and Whole Life Cost story.”

The New Peugeot 308 is now available to order in the UK, with first deliveries in January 2014.

Finally, numerous connected services are offered for the New PEUGEOT 308, with PEUGEOT Connect Apps, based on mobile internet technology. Due to the ergonomics of the touch screen, the applications developed are easy to access and intuitive in use. The driver has practical information available in real time, facilitating use of the vehicle in everyday life: danger areas (via the Coyote application), free parking spaces nearby, fuel prices in filling stations nearby, traffic information, weather, tourist information, diary, etc.

The launch of the New PEUGEOT 308 has already commenced in major European markets and after a couple of months there have already been more than 24,000 orders placed, well ahead of objectives.

The UK PEUGEOT Dealer network will be taking delivery of showroom display and demonstrators from mid-December, before first deliveries commence in January 2014.  The New 308 follows the successful 208 and 2008 Crossover, and arrives just as re-styled versions of the popular 3008 Crossover and 5008 Compact MPV are also available in the market, not forgetting the stunning and very exciting RCZ R Sports Coupé – the most powerful road-going Peugeot ever sold.
