The Volvo XC90 is a successful car, with a range of innovations that elevated the segment into an entirely new dimension, resulting in segment leading sales in main SUV markets. EXTERIOR
Slim, exclusive lines
The Volvo XC90 boasts a modern and elegant appearance. It is a spacious and flexible crossover model that combines the passenger car’s handling and comfort with excellent get-you-there ability and flexibility. The XC90 is designed to give an elegant, muscular and robust impression.
Exclusive Executive and bold R-Design
The XC90 is also available in an even more exclusive Executive version with a number of features that further elevate its level of cosseting luxury. The R-Design version gives the car a more driver-focused character.
INTERIOR
Seven seats
The passenger compartment is very spacious and features a modern uncluttered design. Seven seats are standard on most markets. On some markets there is also a five seats alternative.
The seating position gives the driver a commanding view over the traffic and the passengers a comfortable seating position. All the passenger seats can be folded to create a fully flat loading floor.
The tailgate is divided into an upper and a lower section. This makes the Volvo XC90 a very flexible and versatile car in every day usage.
CHASSIS
Passenger car drive
The XC90 is built as a passenger car, with a unitary body and the same type of chassis as that found in Volvo’s sedan models. The chassis, with spring struts at the front and Multilink axle at the rear, are tuned for a stable, controlled drive and alert steering response.
The Multilink rear axle is an independent rear suspension system featuring a number of links and it is designed to offer a good combination of controlled wheel movements and high ride comfort. A long wheelbase and wide track, together with a very torsionally rigid body, contribute to the predictable, controlled driving manners.
All-Wheel Drive (AWD) for enhanced stability
All-Wheel Drive is an electronically controlled system that distributes engine power between the front and rear wheels quickly and automatically, depending on which wheel pair (front or rear wheels) has the best grip at the moment. The system helps enhance stability and reduces understeer and oversteer, contributing to increased driver control and a comfortable ride.
The system is equipped with PreTension® which improves take-off speed and delivers higher traction on slippery surfaces.
Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC)
Volvo’s Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system continuously registers the car’s roll rate, making it possible to detect slowly building skids at an early stage. Generally, the system helps stabilise the car in evasive manoeuvres, particularly when the car is exposed to high lateral forces.
DRIVELINE AND ENGINES
3.2 AWD naturally aspirated petrol engine
The in-line six-cylinder 3.2-litre naturally aspirated engine offers 243 hp and maximum torque is 320 Nm.
D5 and D4
The Volvo XC90 can be specified with the high-performance D5 engine that produces 200 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. There is also a front-wheel drive (FWD) 2.4 five-cylinder D4 turbodiesel with 163 hp available.
SAFETY & SUPPORT
Roll Stability Control (RSC) and Rollover Protection System (ROPS)
Roll Stability Control is an active system that intervenes in situations when the car senses that there is a risk of rolling over. This function helps stabilise the car and reduces the risk of rolling over in an accident.
If a rollover accident should still occur, the Rollover Protection System helps protect the passengers. A network of beams in the body structure helps distribute and absorb the resulting forces. In addition, an electronic sensor registers if the car is about to roll over and accordingly activates the seat belt pre-tensioners and the Inflatable Curtains.
Park Assist Camera – an extra eye to the rear
In order to protect objects standing behind the car and to aid parking, the XC90 can be equipped a Park Assist Camera.
Volvo On Call combined with Bluetooth
The Volvo On Call system can be combined with the Bluetooth mobile phone service. The Bluetooth connection allows hands-free phone conversations as well as music streaming from a preferred Bluetooth enabled portable music player. Volvo is actually the only brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming throughout the entire vehicle range.
Keep in touch via mobile application
A mobile application that makes sure that the driver can stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. The mobile application is an extension of Volvo On Call.
Owners of all new models with Volvo On Call can download the application that opens up a range of connectivity possibilities. The mobile app is free and downloaded via the iPhone and Android application stores. The app is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance.
Strong body structure
The Volvo XC90 is a modern SUV, built like a passenger car with highly efficient deformation zones, a low centre of gravity and advanced systems to help minimise the risk of personal injuries, irrespective of the situation and accident type.
The exterior systems have the task of distributing and absorbing incoming collision forces so that the passenger compartment remains as intact and undamaged as possible. A gently rounded front and an extra beam below the front bumper help reduce the risk of injury to other road users.
SIPS, WHIPS and extended IC
Volvo Cars has developed a number of in-house functionality and driver support, such as WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and IC (Inflatable Curtain). All are fitted as standard in the Volvo XC90. Certain components have undergone further development specifically for the XC90 model. For instance, the Inflatable Curtain has been extended so that it also covers passengers in the third row of seats. All seven seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel seat belts, belt pre-tensioners and head restraints.

2014 VOLVO XC90 EARNS TOP SAFETY PICK+ IN IIHS CRASH TESTS
Luxury SUV embodies real-life crashworthiness and Volvo’s longtime commitment to safety
ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (Nov. 6, 2013) – In a testament to Volvo’s longtime commitment to passenger protection, the 2014 Volvo XC90 luxury SUV earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Institute’s top safety award.
To earn TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must pass a series of crashworthiness evaluations, including the small overlap front test — a real-life scenario that replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or an object.
“Small overlap collisions at high speeds are often very severe,” noted Adam Kopstein, safety and compliance manager for Volvo Cars of North America. “For decades, Volvo’s research testing has addressed these crash scenarios because our commitment to safety is at the core of our values.”
In its evaluation of the XC90’s performance, IIHS noted:
- Good structural performance in the small overlap front test
- Low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of high severity
- Side torso and side curtain airbags both deployed.
“The XC90’s structural performance was good in the small overlap front test, and the driver’s space was maintained well,” said IIHS in a released statement. “While many vehicles have had to undergo significant structural changes to earn good ratings in the small overlap test, the XC90 has had the same basic platform since 2003.”
Since its launch, Volvo’s XC90 luxury SUV has won acclaim from legions of satisfied customers while receiving many awards internationally. The XC90 upholds a legacy of safety, such as its pioneering introduction of the world’s first Roll Stability Control.
An all-new XC90 will debut at the end of 2014 and go on sale in early 2015. It will feature Volvo’s next-generation safety and driver-support technologies, including Pedestrian Detection in Darkness and Road Edge and Barrier Detection with Steer Assist.
