Volvo Announces V60 Sports Wagon Will Come to U.S. Market
=Already a superstar in Europe, Volvo’s V60 sports wagon soon will hit the shores of America.
Doug Speck, Volvo Cars’ senior vice president marketing, sales and customer service, made the announcement at the New York International Auto Show, indicating the new V60 will come to the U.S. market in early 2014. Pricing and specifications will be announced at a later date.
The V60 R-Design on the auto show stand marks the global debut of the R-Design version of the car. It projects an elegant, curvy and sculptured appearance that equally straddles luxury and performance.
“The V60 builds upon our wagon heritage, and it’s a beautiful evolution in design and direction for Volvo,” said Volvo Cars of North America President and CEO John Maloney. “Many consumers will be glad to see the addition of this exciting sports wagon to the Volvo lineup in America. And this time, we’ve added sophistication with the dynamic driving performance of a sedan.”
The new Volvo V60 is for people who want the handling of a dynamic sports sedan but need the versatility of a wagon. Now, forging a new path with the V60, the Scandinavian automaker reaches a new level of design and sophistication, blending styling cues from its best-selling sedan with a sleek, curvy silhouette.
At the heart of the extra versatility of the V60 is its intelligent seating. Rear seats can be folded down in three 40/20/40 segments, allowing its interior space to be configured for passengers and loaded in a remarkably flexible way.
The new Volvo V60 is the car for people who need the versatility of an estate but want the handling of a sports sedan – all in a stylish Scandinavian package. The sporty feel is emphasised by new, comfortable sport seats. Initially, the new V60 is available with three engines from the new four-cylinder Drive-E engine family: The 306 hp petrol turbo T6, the 245 hp T5 and the turbo diesel D4 with 181 hp. A new 8-speed automatic gearbox contributes to a refined drive and excellent fuel economy. Fuel consumption in a V60 D4 with manual gearbox is down to a class-leading 3.8 l/100 km, translating into CO2 emissions at 99 g/km with up to 17-inch wheels.
DESIGN
Accentuated road presence
As with the new Volvo S60, the design team has increased the new V60’s road presence by emphasising its horizontal lines, which visually connects the car directly to the road. The V60’s silhouette is a visual reminder that this is no ordinary estate – it’s a wagon with a coupé-like appearance.
To enhance the visual appeal of the car, it is now possible to specify the V60 with expressive 19-inch wheels and keep the same profile height as 18-inch ones, without compromising comfort.
Redesigned interior
Scandinavian design is exemplified by beautiful, simple shapes and surfaces with any unnecessary clutter removed. This is evident in the redesigned V60 interior and exterior. Inside, the attention to detail, the authentic materials – such as wood and leather – and the easy-to-use controls contribute to the in-command driving experience. There are upgrades such as new upholstery colours, a new headliner.
At the heart of the extra versatility of the V60 is its intelligent seating. The rear seats can be folded down in three 40/20/40 segments, so that the rear 430 litres of load space can be supplemented quickly and easily. Parents favour the V60’s two-stage integrated booster cushions for children. With one simple movement, the booster cushions pop-up from the seat base giving a comfortable and safe ride height for children from three years and upwards.
New, comfortable sport seat
Supportive yet comfortable seats that ensure a fresh and relaxed arrival after the longest of journeys have been one of Volvo strengths for decades. The buyer of the V60 can now specify a new sport seat that retains this traditional comfort and makes a perfect addition to the in-command feel of a true driver’s car. It has great hugging side support all the way from the thighs to the shoulders, so the seat keeps the driver firmly in position when cornering fast.
Emphasised attention to detail
There are several other examples of the attention to detail in the new V60. The previously visible washer nozzles have been relocated out of sight under the bonnet.
The radar cover has been painted gloss black, which practically makes it disappear in the grille. The chrome frame around the grille has been removed and the new, bigger ironmark badge enhances the new cars’ self-confident look.
The new integrated tailpipes, which can be specified with some engine variants, are the physical and visual link to the technically advanced engines. But it’s not just about beautiful design: the designers have had to cope with the fact that at operating temperature, the tailpipes have to remain perfectly in place despite the exhaust system expanding in length by up to 25mm. This is another example of true Scandinavian precision engineering.
R-DESIGN
Unique new front
The V60 R-Design features a unique face with a redesigned, dynamic, expressive nose. The frameless Tech Matte Black grille has high-gloss black stripes, a silk metal diagonal and a refined R-Design emblem. The DRL lights in the outer corners reinforce the low, road-hugging impression. At the rear, the unique diffuser with aero fins is flanked by the round, high-tech R-Design tailpipes. The R-Design version is now available with all-new 19″ Ixion II wheels.
New generation R-Design interior
The new sport seat come as standard in the V60 R-Design. It features a blend of black nubuck textile and perforated leather. The embroidered R-design logo with a blue ‘R’ confirms the sporty aura.
By blending inlays with a perforated look, black leather and contrasting stitching, the design team has created an R-design interior with all the details in perfect harmony, crowned by the black headliner. The new stainless steel tread plate with a bright blue ‘R’ in the emblem is another exquisite detail.
CHASSIS & POWER TRAINS
Four chassis choices
The V60 delivers a dynamic driving experience, with the same pin-sharp handling as its sister saloon and with the same chassis options and the same levels of customer preference – Touring, Dynamic, Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) and Lower Sport Chassis, previously only available on the R-Design version
Powerful all-new T6
At the top of the all-new Drive-E offer is the T6 with an output of 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The engine features a class-leading combination of a compressor and a turbo charger. Using the supercharger to fill in the bottom end gives the engine a big, naturally aspirated feel. The mechanically linked compressor starts to function immediately at low revs, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 6.7 l/100 km (157 g/km) in the V60.
All-new T5 with 245 hp
The new four-cylinder Drive-E engine T5 has 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 6.1 l/100 km (142 g/km) in the V60. Furthermore, there is a 1.6-litre GTDi engine available in two versions: T4 with 180 hp and T3 with 150 hp. Fuel consumption is down to 5.8 l/100 km in the V60 T3 with manual gearbox. This corresponds to CO2 emissions at 134 g/km. The V60 T4 or T3 and automatic gearbox now offers fuel consumption at 7.2 l/100 km (167 g/km).
D5 with 215 hp
The five-cylinder D5 turbo diesel has 215 hp and 420 Nm of torque. The D5 with manual gearbox has fuel consumption at 4.6 l/100 km (CO2 emissions at 120 g/km).
All-new D4 with 99 g/km
The new D4 Drive-E turbo diesel comes with 181 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The engine features world-first i-ART technology that helps to cut fuel consumption. By featuring pressure feedback from each fuel injector instead of using a traditional single pressure sensor in the common rail, i-ART makes it possible to continuously monitor and adapt fuel injection per combustion in each of the four cylinders.
Fuel consumption in a V60 with manual gearbox is down to a class-leading 3.8 l/100 km, translating into CO2 emissions at 99 g/km. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 4.2 l/100 km (109 g/km).
The automatic D3 (136 hp) version of the new Volvo V60 now comes with fuel consumption at 4.9 l/100 km (129 g/km). The figures with the manual gearbox are 4.5 l/100 km (119 g/km).
1.6-litre D2 diesel
The D2 version of the V60 features a 1.6-litre diesel engine. The engine produces 115 hp and 270 Nm of torque. The D2 engine with a manual gearbox comes with fuel consumption at 4.1 l/100 km (EU Combined), corresponding to CO2 emissions at 108 g/km. The corresponding figures for the automatic version are 4.2 l/100 km (110 g/km).
SENSUS
All-new infotainment system – Sensus Connect
The Digital Display theme colours are also echoed in the all-new connected infotainment system, which is introduced in the S60, V60 and XC60 during the second half of 2013. It features a refreshed HMI with a number of innovative functions, such as:
- Cloud-based services integrated into the car, enabling future functionality updates
- Improved navigation with 3D maps, local search, and send-to-car remote destination setting.
- New 3G telematics option (Volvo On Call), offering a WiFi hotspot for Internet connectivity.
- TuneIn Internet radio (with 80,000 channels), and music streaming through Bluetooth
- Voice control of most infotainment and navigation functions.
Adaptive Digital Display
The Adaptive Digital Display, which debuted in the all-new V40, uses an active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display to bring the driver personalised information. There are three themes to choose from: Elegance, Eco and Performance.
The default mode Elegance has a classic look and layout. The Eco mode has a green colour theme and is designed to encourage and reward a fuel-efficient driving style. Performance features red illumination, and a rev scale instead of the speedometer displayed in the Elegance and Eco versions.
Heated steering wheel and paddle shifters
To give drivers in cold climate extra comfort, three-spoke steering wheels can now be specified with electric heating. Cars with automatic transmission can get paddle shifters that give the driver the opportunity to shift gear manually with both hands on the wheel. Cars equipped with a rain sensor can now also get an electrically heated windscreen for rapid de-icing on cold winter days.
SAFETY AND SUPPORT
IntelliSafe, Volvo’s blanket name for all active safety systems, is an important part of the driver-centric approach in the V60.
Electrical Power Assist Steering
The Electrical Power Assist Steering (EPAS), available with the all-new Drive-E powertrains, uses an electrical motor to support the steering rack, and the driver can choose between three levels of power assistance.
In Low mode the system provides a high degree of power support, making manoeuvring easier. Medium mode has somewhat lower power support to offer more road response at higher speeds. High mode is the ultimate setting for the enthusiastic driver, contributing to the car’s dynamic character.
Electrical Power Assist Steering enables integration of safety and driver support functions that involve the steering, such as Lane Keeping Aid and Park Assist Pilot.
Permanent high beam with groundbreaking technology
The new Active High Beam Control eliminates the need to switch between low and high beam. Instead, Active High Beam Control makes it possible keep the headlights on high beam continuously.
When another car approaches from the opposite direction, the system helps to prevent dazzling of the oncoming driver by shading out only as much of the beam as necessary. This is done by an ingenious projector module mechanism integrated into the headlamp. The same benefit applies to drivers in preceding cars.
New Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection technology
New advanced software, including more rapid vision processing, has now made it possible to extend Volvo Cars’ present detection and auto brake technology to cover certain cyclist situations as well.
The new Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake is equipped with an advanced sensor system that scans the area ahead. If a cyclist heading in the same direction as the car suddenly swerves out in front of the car as it approaches from behind and a collision is imminent, there is an instant warning and full braking power is applied.
The technology also detects if a pedestrian steps out into the road in front of the car. If the driver does not respond in time, the car can warn and automatically activate the brakes.
City Safety – active up to 50 km/h
The V60 features an upgraded City Safety system. This system is active at speeds up to 50 km/h. The car automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops – or if the car is approaching a stationary vehicle too fast.
Cornering Light for better visibility
Another innovative option for driving in the dark is the low-speed Cornering Light feature. As an extension of the current Active Bending Light system, it lights up the area the driver is steering towards for safer manoeuvring.
Park Assist Pilot
Park Assist Pilot makes parallel parking easy and precise by taking over and operating the steering wheel while the driver handles the gearbox and controls the car’s speed. The parking manoeuvre is based on front, rear and side-facing ultrasonic sensors.
Lane Keeping Aid
Lane Keeping Aid helps the driver stay in the lane. This feature applies extra steering torque to the steering column when the car gets close to a lane marking and is about to leave the lane. The system is active at speeds between 65 km/h and 200 km/h. As a first step, Lane Keeping Aid applies gentle steering wheel torque to help the driver steer back onto the intended course. If the car leaves the lane, the technology generates a distinctive warning through a haptic vibration in the steering wheel.
Enhanced Blind Spot Information System – for better visibility
The V60 offers the enhanced Blind Sport Information System (BLIS), which is radar-based. The technology can now also monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles up to 70 m behind the car. Of course it still informs the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides.
Cross Traffic Alert – covering your back
Cross Traffic Alert uses the radar sensors at the rear end of the car to alert the driver to crossing traffic from the sides when reversing out of a parking space. This is especially helpful in tight and crowded areas where the side view might be limited due to infrastructure, vegetation or other parked cars.
Road Sign Information – an extra “eye” on the traffic environment
Road Sign Information supports the driver by displaying road signs in the instrument display. Road Sign Information can be combined with the Speed Alert function, which provides the driver with a visual warning in the speedometer if the speed limit is exceeded.
Volvo On Call combined with Bluetooth
The Volvo On Call system can be combined with the Bluetooth mobile phone service. The Bluetooth connection allows hands-free phone conversations as well as music streaming from a preferred Bluetooth enabled portable music player. Volvo is actually the only brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming throughout the entire vehicle range.
Keep in touch via mobile application
A mobile application that makes sure that the driver can stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. The mobile application is an extension of Volvo On Call.
Owners of all new models with Volvo On Call can download the application that opens up a range of connectivity possibilities. The mobile app is free and downloaded via the iPhone and Android application stores. The app is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance.
VOLVO ANNOUNCES ENGINES FOR V60 SPORTSWAGON COMING TO U.S. MARKET
Targeting best-in-class performance and best-in-class fuel economy, Volvo Cars of North America announced engines for the much-anticipated Volvo V60 sportswagon that will hit American shores in January.
From the automaker known for its wagons, the new Volvo V60 is by no means ordinary. It provides all the handling of a dynamic sports sedan but offers additional versatility for people who need a wagon. Pricing and specifications will be announced at a later date.
Powered By a Range of Engine Choices
The V60 will feature front-drive power from the new Drive-E family and all-wheel-drive models will be powered by engines from Volvo’s current lineup. One of the Drive-E gasoline engines will be offered — a two-liter, turbocharged, 240-horsepower version.
“This is an exciting time of transformation for Volvo and shows our Swedish heart is beating strongly,” said Volvo Cars of North America President and CEO John Maloney. “The V60 signifies our first step in a gradual move toward powerful, highly efficient, four-cylinder engines across the entire portfolio of our vehicles.”
As a result, U.S. V60 customers can choose between the new engine and some current engines until Volvo transitions solely to Drive-E. At the top of the power heap is the performance-tuned T6 engine offered in the V60 R-Design, making 325 horsepower and 354 lb.-feet of torque.

The smaller, lighter Drive-E engines deliver considerably lower emissions and higher fuel economy savings — ranging from 13 to 26 percent depending on the engine to which they are compared. They also offer the opportunity to be augmented by electrification. Specific fuel economy numbers will become available shortly before cars with Drive-E powertrains reach retail outlets early next year.

For the more performance-minded individual, Volvo’s R-Design version of the V60 promises a more intense driving experience. Whilst the S60 and V60 Polestar will be available globally, Volvo Car UK will continue to deliver on the call for fast estates by limiting availability to the new V60 Polestar only.

All-year performance
The car is based on the latest generation Volvo S/V60 and marks the start of an extended Polestar production model range. Development of the car has been ongoing over the past years, picking up from the C30 and S60 Concept cars and the Australian S60 Polestar. Thousands of development kilometres have been driven on twisty mountain roads, on the Autobahn and test tracks from the south of Europe to the frozen north of Sweden.
”We have continued our work to create a true driver’s car which is not limited only to a few specific driving conditions, but enjoyable on everything from your favourite winding roads to taking the family for a long journey, no matter summer or winter. And in my view, we have gotten very close to our goals, something that of course is best experienced first-hand behind the wheel,” said Robert Dahlgren, Polestar racing and test driver.
Polestar performance engineering
Chassis
Upgrades include modifications made to increase rigidity of the chassis to cater for the 80% stiffer springs relative to the standard S60 R-Design. These changes combined with the tailored high performance Öhlins shock absorbers and 20” Polestar wheels results in a precise, yet comfortable, driving experience.
Brakes
The brake system has undergone substantial modifications. Most visible are the 371 millimetre ventilated front discs and six-piston Brembo calipers, guaranteeing a high level of braking performance.
Aerodynamics
To reflect the increased performance of the S60 and V60 Polestar, positive aerodynamic effects have been achieved through subtle, yet efficient, modifications based on data from tests in the Volvo Cars wind tunnel. The changes are visible with the front splitters, optimising the airflow underneath the car, as well as a new rear spoiler and diffusor, increasing downforce.
Engine
The six-cylinder turbo-charged T6 engine has undergone extensive development with a new twin-scroll turbo and intercooler to produce 350 HP/257 kW at 5700 rpm and 500 Nm/369 lb-ft at 2800 rpm. The engine breathes through a 2.5” stainless steel exhaust system, making for a throaty engine note.
Transmission
The six-speed automatic gearbox features a new paddle shift system that together with the Polestar developed Haldex four-wheel drive system takes the car from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds and to a limited top speed of 155 mph. The gearbox as well as the four-wheel drive system and traction control system has been recalibrated in order to provide an active driving experience and maximum grip in all situations.
Interior
The interior has been reworked with new details, materials and Polestar colours, such as the steering wheel, seats and more, with the sole purpose of increasing driver support and control.
”All in all we have taken a major step forward in all areas, from chassis and engine to interior and exterior details. Development work has been focused on the overall package in order to create a car that you want to use every day, both from a practical and emotional perspective,” said Henrik Fries, S/V60 Polestar Technical Project Manager.
Sales and delivery
Polestar will begin delivery of the new S60 and V60 Polestar in June 2014 to local markets.
