2014 Vauxhall ADAM

ADAM ROCKS READY TO ROLL

Production-ready ADAM ROCKS debuts at the Geneva Motor Show

  • Urban mini-crossover features rugged, outdoor looks and electric folding canvas roof
  • First Vauxhall to get punchy new 115PS 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine
  • Rocking up to next month’s Geneva Motor Show is Vauxhall’s funky urban mini-crossover the ADAM ROCKS.

The latest edition to Vauxhall’s city chic ADAM range was previewed as a concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and after receiving a rapturous reception the production model is poised to make a show-stopping debut a year later.

Rocking rugged design

Compared with other members of the ADAM family, ROCKS is taller, wider and tougher in appearance, while also offering a full-length electric folding canvas roof.

ADAM ROCKS’ new crossover body style is supported by a chassis that is raised 15mm with a wider stance. Agile parkour athletes, who move from one place to another, negotiating urban obstacles in between, were the inspiration for this sporty crossover concept.

Parts of the chassis system have been modified or re-tuned – including dampers, springs, the rear suspension geometry, and steering. The higher, wider looks are matched by a choice of 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels. These can be further personalized with new wheel clips in “Wild” design and different colours that are unique to ROCKS.

Protective, anthracite-coloured cladding is wrapped tightly around the ADAM ROCKS, giving it a tough, muscular look. The front trapezoidal grille, with a chrome central brand bar, is embedded in the cladding, while contrasting, satin chrome ‘boomerang’ elements frame the front fog lamps/indicator housings and the reversing/fog lamps at the rear. An integrated rear roof spoiler and LED daytime running lights also come as standard. Silver skid plates front and rear and a bold chrome exhaust complete the exterior design.

New exterior paint colours will be introduced with ADAM ROCKS, starting with the vibrant yellow Goldbusters.

ROCKS combines its rugged individuality with open air fun. The electric folding canvas roof is operated via a button located in the front area of the headliner and folds back neatly on to the C-pillars in just five seconds. Creating a wide opening into the sky, this stylish system has no negative impact on body stiffness or on the car’s functionality: the boot keeps the full opening of a hatchback and loading volume remains untouched.

The entire roof module is acoustically tuned for noise insulation inside the cabin, and the robust, three-layer fabric has a neoprene centre for weatherproofing and durability. The folding canvas roof is available in a choice of three exterior colours – Black, Sweet Coffee or Light Oak – that combine with the different roof colours of the ROCKS.

ROCKS’ cabin reverberates with its own distinctive character. Two new, exclusive ROCKS interior trims have been designed. They include a main instrument cluster, seat and door panel colours and other trim elements – all unique to Vauxhall’s urban chic newcomer. One trim is taken directly from the ADAM ROCKS concept car revealed last year: it has elegant-sporty Peanut-coloured fabric/Morrocana seats and door panels, leather steering wheel, gearshift and handbrake in the same colour, and a “Surf” décor trim. The other features a sophisticated Coffee Bean design – rich dark brown seats in a black cabin trimmed with bright blue stitching.

New 1.0-litre engine packs triple punch

ROCKS is the first model to feature Vauxhall’s all-new 1.0-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo three-cylinder engine. This high-tech pocket rocket raises the bar for three-cylinder engine refinement and packs up to 115PS, with impressive low-end torque of 166 Nm.

Contributing to the overall efficiency of the all-aluminium engine with a single scroll turbocharger include direct injection, variable valve timing, a switchable water pump and an integrated exhaust manifold. Fuel-saving Start/Stop technology is an integral part of the system and offered as standard. The new 1.0 ECOTEC comes with a choice of two power outputs, 90PS and 115PS.

Both versions of the new three-cylinder powerhouse are mated to an all-new six-speed manual gearbox with a compact package design. During its development, focus was on efficiency (thanks to reduced friction) and benchmark shifting: gear change is comfortable, precise and smooth.

The new engine tops a powertrain portfolio including ADAM’s three current four-cylinder naturally-aspirated units comprising a 1.2-litre engine with 70PS and a 1.4-litre available in two power outputs, 87PS and 100PS.

Like its ADAM siblings, ROCKS is one of the best connected small cars around thanks to its state-of-the-art Intelilink infotainment system. Priced from just £275, it allows seamless integration of Android as well as Apple iOS smartphone functionalities into the car. It provides USB and Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, a seven-inch high-definition colour touch-screen and seven speakers. Clever apps including navigation BringGo, Stitcher and TuneIn can be downloaded.

The integration of Apple iOS devices into the system enables Siri Eyes Free voice control. This makes it possible for drivers to have incoming text messages read aloud and to dictate messages while they keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the steering wheel.

“ADAM ROCKS combines the toughness of a crossover with the coolness of open air driving,” said Stuart Harris, Vauxhall’s Head of Carline Brand. “It’s the perfect ADAM for active drivers wanting to stand out from the crowd.”

ADAM ROCKS pricing will be announced when it goes on sale in the summer. Production is due to start in Eisenach, Germany in August.

Vauxhall’s fashionable A-sector ADAM has scooped the best interior design in a production car award at the Automotive Interiors EXPO 2013.

Beating stiff competition including the Alfa 4C, Jaguar F-Type, Renault Clio and the new Range Rover, Vauxhall’s stylish urban newcomer was selected by a jury of respected motoring journalists from around the world. The award is part of a trade show in Stuttgart, Germany for concepts, materials, surfaces, fabrics and components in vehicle interior equipment.

Elizabeth Wetzel, Interior Design Director for the newcomer, is especially pleased with the Vauxhall ADAM’s victory: “The individualisation of the interior is one of the ADAM’s many outstanding traits. Like all Vauxhalls, ADAM is covered by a Lifetime Warranty up to 100,000 miles.

VAUXHALL ADAM’S NEW ENGINE GIVES A TRIPLE PUNCH

New 115PS 1.0-litre turbo raises bar for three-cylinder refinement
First in new family of small-displacement direct injection petrol engines
Higher torque than 1.6-litre engine
Cylinder head-integrated exhaust manifold
Teamed with new six-speed gearbox
30 per cent lighter than predecessor
Vauxhall will unveil an all-new high-tech 1.0-litre three–cylinder petrol engine at the Frankfurt Motor Show, ahead of its debut in the ADAM city car next year.

The 1.0-litre turbo petrol, known as SGE (small gasoline engine), represents a new benchmark for refinement in three-cylinder engines, with noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) characteristics superior to many four cylinder units.

Developing 115PS, the pocket powerhouse delivers generous low-end torque of 166Nm all the way from 1,800 to 4,700rpm, belying its small size.

The 1.0-litre spark ignition direct injection (SIDI) turbo generates more torque throughout its operating range than equally powerful, higher displacement engines, while fuel efficiency is improved by 20 per cent compared with the current 1.6-litre naturally aspirated unit that powers the Astra.

Set to appear first in the stylish ADAM next year with an all-new six-speed gearbox, the 12-valve, 1.0-litre turbo is the first in a new, modular family of three and four-cylinder Vauxhall petrol engines up to 1.6-litres.

State-of-the-art technologies such as direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, and a lightweight aluminium cylinder-block, are key to the engine’s efficiency. Vauxhall expects the new engine family to deliver impressive fuel economy and CO2 emissions significantly lower than 100g/km.

“In developing this small engine, we not only set out minimise fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. We also wanted to demonstrate that three cylinders can be just as refined as four or more,” said Dr. Matthias Alt, Chief Engineer, Small Gasoline Engines. “We tackled at source the balance, noise and vibration issues typical of conventional three-cylinder engines, and we’re confident customers will be pleasantly surprised by the results. This is a very lively and refined three-cylinder engine which doesn’t compromise driving fun.”

Engineered for class-leading acoustics

Vauxhall engineers started with a clean sheet of paper, which enabled a series of measures to eliminate the typical, ‘off-beat’ running characteristics which have traditionally accompanied three-cylinder engines.

The die-cast aluminium cylinder block is designed to reduce radiated and structure-borne engine noise, as well as reduce weight. The high-pressure fuel rail and injectors are also isolated from the cylinder head to minimise the transmission of pulsing, while the fuel pump and fuel line are acoustically treated.

Another major contributor to refinement is the installation of a balancer shaft in the oil sump. Driven by a chain with inverted teeth for quiet running, the counter-rotating shaft spins at crankshaft speed and is carefully mass-optimized to offset the inherent vibrations from a three cylinder operation.

Other noise attenuation measures include: acoustically-optimized covers for the top and front of the engine, the intake manifold and camshaft housings; crankshaft isolation with iron main bearing inserts; inverted teeth for camshaft drive chains; a low-hiss turbo compressor; and a lower oil pan in steel.

As a result of these engineering features, the new 1.0 SIDI Turbo is not only more refined than other three-cylinder engines, but also quieter than many four-cylinder units. For example, in bench testing at full throttle, it emits lower noise levels across all engine speeds than similarly powerful gasoline turbos up to 1.6-litres displacement. Its inherent refinement is so good, that the need for additional in-car sound insulation, or complex engine mountings and sub-frames, is significantly reduced.

Strong power and torque

The 1.0 SIDI Turbo also packs a punch, generating more torque than Vauxhall’s current 1.6-litre, naturally-aspirated engine, as well as the same 115PS maximum power output.

Jewel-like precision engineering is used in the integration of the exhaust manifold inside the aluminium cylinder head, which is bolted directly to the low-inertia, water-cooled turbocharger. This compact installation contributes to the delivery of a fast boost charge for strong, low-end power. Maximum torque of 166Nm from just 1,800 rpm is almost 30 per cent higher than the 1.6-litre engine generates at the same rpm.

The six-hole fuel injectors are centrally located above each piston to provide efficient combustion, and dual cam-phasing enables variable valve timing for optimum engine breathing. A twin displacement oil pump and a switchable water pump, which is disengaged when the engine coolant is cold in order to accelerate warm-up, also contribute to low fuel consumption.

All-new, weight-saving six-speed gearbox

The 1.0 SIDI Turbo is mated to an all-new, six-speed manual gearbox specially designed for medium torque applications. With a dry weight of only 37kg, it is about 30 per cent lighter than its current counterpart. It is also extremely compact, measuring just 375mm along its axis.

Featuring superior shift quality, with a short lever travel and low shifting effort, the new transmission incorporates many of the refinements recently introduced on Vauxhall’s next-generation gearboxes. These include gears with wide, asymmetrically-cut dog teeth, and triple-cone synchronizers for first/second gear, with double cones for third/fourth. Reverse gear is also synchronized.

The new gearbox will be used in a broad range of small and sub-compact Vauxhall vehicles with engines rated at up to 220Nm torque. For optimum powertrain efficiency in each application, the matrix of gearing choices comprises 12 sets of gear ratios and seven final drives.

Next step in Vauxhall’s powertrain renewal program

The launch of the 1.0-litre SIDI Turbo and its new six-speed gearbox is the latest step in the renewal of Vauxhall’s powertrain portfolio, which will see three new engine families and 13 new engines introduced between 2012 and 2016, plus a host of new transmissions.

The program began with the launch of the first engines in new mid-size petrol and diesel families. These 1.6-litre turbo units are now joined by the 1.0-litre turbo, as the first example of new, small displacement engine family. All will be built at GM’s new Szentgotthard plant in Hungary, where petrol and diesel engines are produced on a shared assembly line.

New generation Vauxhall power plants are focused on meeting a growing customer demand for ‘downsized’ engines which are able to deliver reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, in combination with the power and refinement typical of larger displacement engines.

VAUXHALL CORSAVAN

In the first five months of 2013, Vauxhall has seen sales of its award-winning Corsavan increase by nearly a quarter compared to the same period in 2012.

Corsavan sales to small businesses have seen a particularly big increase, with sales up by more than 70 per cent year-on-year, cementing the popularity of this surprisingly roomy, well-equipped, economical van.

Few vans on the market can match Corsavan’s low running costs and its capability to both nip around town and make light work of motorway miles. Despite its compact dimensions and sleek styling, the Corsavan boasts a class-leading payload of 550kg.

One of the reasons for the impressive increase in sales of Corsavan is its impressive fuel economy of up to 83.1mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions as low as 89g/km – lower than many of the cleanest cars on the market. Another way van operators are saving money is on insurance, with all Corsavan models falling into Group 1E.

Richard Collier, National Commercial Vehicle Sales Manager, Vauxhall said: “We’re delighted with the significant sales growth that Corsavan has experienced so far in 2013. Of course, with a best-in-class payload and outstanding fuel economy at a time of rising fuel costs, we’re not surprised that the award-winning Corsavan is proving so popular.”

All Corsavan models benefit from safe and predictable handling, a spacious cabin and high levels of safety and security. The 1.3-litre CDTi ecoFLEX model with Start/Stop delivers lively performance along with exceptional fuel economy and low emissions.

The Corsavan cabin is built for long-term driver comfort, with its new-look interior detailing, supportive seats and plenty of useful in-cab storage.

ADAM LINK MODELS GET WORLD-FIRST TALKING CAR TECH AS STANDARD

  • Optimal connectivity and stylish travel with innovative ADAM special models
  • IntelliLink infotainment system and Siri Eyes Free voice control as standard
  • Individual smartphone looks with black-white contrast
  • Union of ultra-modern technology and clear, technical design

Vauxhall’s ADAM Black Link and White Link special editions are on show for the first time at Frankfurt featuring innovative voice control technology.

With the clever IntelliLink infotainment system and Siri Eyes Free voice control as standard, these trendy black-white special models with smartphone-inspired looks will be the vehicle of choice for style-conscious A-sector customers.

Produced in a limit run of just 250 cars and following on from the Siri Eyes Free study on show at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, both ADAM Link models reflect typical smartphone looks in black or white, with accents in brushed aluminum.

“The ADAM Black Link and ADAM White Link models are like a sophisticated smartphone on wheels,” says Tina Müller, Opel Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “From the late fall, we will be offering them with our clever IntelliLink infotainment system and Siri Eyes Free voice control fitted as standard, in combination with a very special smartphone design. In an unconventional way, the ADAM combines innovative technologies with countless personalisation possibilities which are not available anywhere else to this extent. With these new models, our stylish city car once again shows that it is the best connected small car and a true individualization champion all wrapped up in one.”

ADAM drivers who have an iOS 6 – or later – compatible iPhone can comfortably and safely activate the Siri Eyes Free function via steering wheel controls and operate it with voice commands while keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

Entertainment and navigation over Siri Eyes Free and Opel FlexDock

To activate Siri in Eyes Free mode, drivers connect their iPhone with IntelliLink via Bluetooth and then press the voice activation button on the steering wheel. Siri Eyes Free can be called up while other apps, such as BringGo Navigation, are running in the background. Music and navigation information is automatically muted during this time. The following functions are available with voice command over Siri Eyes Free:

Telephone calls to saved contacts
Play songs in the iTunes Library and switch between different music sources such as radio and iPod
Listen to, write and send an iMessage or text message to a telephone number or saved contact
Access calendar and add appointments
Siri Eyes Free also provides answers to questions about sports results or the dates of national holidays, for example. To minimize distraction from road traffic and increase safety, the iPhone screen remains dark.
Thanks to Siri Eyes Free, even navigation with Apple Maps is child’s play. Places, addresses and destinations can be entered verbally, without the driver having to look at the IntelliLink screen. The map is shown on the iPhone display mounted in the FlexDock. With the standard FlexDock smartphone set-up in the instrument panel in the ADAM Black Link and White Link, drivers have full access to Siri Eyes Free. In this way they can even ask how close they are to their destination. Another advantage of the FlexDock is that it automatically re-charges the iPhone it’s holding so the battery doesn’t deplete.

The Vauxhall IntelliLink infotainment system features a 7-inch color touchscreen and also includes the Tune-in app for global radio reception, the navigation app BringGo and Stitcher, an app for receiving internet radio podcasts from around the world. The infotainment system is also compatible with Android software-operated devices. This makes the ADAM the most user-friendly and cleverly connected small car on the market.

Ultra-modern technology in technically-inspired black-white design

Ultra-modern iPhone technology and design is mirrored in the looks of the special ADAM Black Link and White Link models. The ADAM comes in I’ll be Black or Saturday White Fever exterior colors. Accentuated contrasts to the rest of the body are provided by brushed, aluminum-look colored side mirror housings and the grille bar carrying the Vauxhall logo in the same look, as well as the tinted rear window and 18-inch wheels in a Twister design with matching wheel clips. An eye-catcher is also the black or white lacquered standard roof spoiler, as well as the characteristically shaped headlamps with LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights. The standard, crisp sport chassis provides lots of driving fun with its direct response.

Inside the cabin, the seats, instruments and applications continue the exterior colour scheme. In the ADAM Black Link, all occupants enjoy the comfort of OCIO Black Morrocana seat cushions. While the centre console and instrument panel are also black, the door trims, glove box, leather gear knob and handbrake handle are in contrasting bright white and technically-inspired Sky Cool Grey. The counterpart to all this is the White Link version, with its own color scheme: the seats are radiant in OCIO White Morrocana, just like elements in the instrument panel and center console.

First deliveries of ADAM Black Link and White Link will be early next year.

MARKET AND MODEL

  • ADAM ROCKS AIR features contemporary style of ADAM
  • Toughness of a cross over combined with coolness of electric folding canvas roof
  • Priced from £14,695 with first deliveries in September

ADAM, Vauxhall’s stylish urban-chic city car, took the fashion-led A-sector by storm when it went on sale last year. Now the latest edition to the Vauxhall range, the ADAM ROCKS AIR is set to extend the ADAM family further.

Debuting at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, ROCKS AIR has a bespoke body style, offering the same contemporary style as the original ADAM but with the toughness of a crossover and the coolness of an electric folding canvas roof.

Being first to market means there is no direct competitor to ADAM ROCKS AIR, giving this latest new Vauxhall the opportunity to grow the ADAM range even further.

However elements of the ROCKS AIR can be seen in the MINI Paceman (as it also combines the qualities of both an SUV and a coupe) and the Fiat 500 Cabrio, with its folding roof.

ROCKS AIR shares the same postmodern target customer as ADAM.  These are stylish, trend-setters who are very image-conscious.  Such individuals want a vehicle that expresses their personality and individuality.

This group is predominately under 35 and pre-family and is split 60:40 female to male. These young urbanites also influence other more mainstream buying groups outside of the auto sector.

A secondary ROCKS AIR target customer will be those with families looking for a second car with bags of style and personality.

ADAM ROCKS AIR went from concept car to production readiness in just twelve months. It was developed at Vauxhall/Opel’s International Technical Development Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany and, like the rest of the ADAM family, is built in Eisenach, Germany.

The A-segment into which ADAM ROCKS AIR slots is growing rapidly, seeing growth of 15 per cent between 2012 and 2013 and a further 10 per cent in the first half of this year versus the same period last year.

In its first year on sale in 2013, over 8,000 ADAMs were registered with the majority (7,526) to private buyers.  ADAM took a segment share of 5.65 per cent in the first half of 2014.

Over 100,000 ADAMs have been registered across Europe since its launch with other important markets including Germany, Italy, France and the Netherlands.

Keenly priced from £14,695, ROCKS AIR is available to order now with first deliveries expected in September.

“ADAM ROCKS AIR combines the toughness of a crossover with the coolness of open air driving,” said Stuart Harris, Vauxhall’s Head of Carline Brand. “It’s the perfect ADAM for active drivers wanting to stand out from the crowd.”

Creating a wide opening, this stylish system has no negative impact on body stiffness or on the car’s functionality: the boot keeps the full opening of a hatchback and loading volume remains untouched.

The entire roof module is acoustically tuned for noise insulation inside the cabin, and the robust, three-layer fabric has a neoprene centre for weatherproofing and durability. The folding canvas roof is available in a choice of two exterior colours – Black or Sweet Coffee – that combine with the different roof colours of the ROCKS AIR.

Interior

ROCKS AIR’s cabin has its own distinctive character. Two new, exclusive ROCKS AIR interior trims have been created. They include a main instrument cluster, seat and door panel colours and other trim elements – all unique to ROCKS.

One trim is taken directly from the ADAM ROCKS AIR concept car revealed last year: it has Brandy-coloured fabric/Morrocana seats and door panels, leather steering wheel, gearshift and handbrake in the same colour, and “Surf” décor trim.

The other trim features a sophisticated Coffee Bean design – rich dark brown seats in a black cabin trimmed with bright blue stitching.

POWERTRAIN AND CHASSIS

  • First Vauxhall to get new 115PS 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine
  • All-new six-speed gearbox
  • Modified chassis with raised ride height and new steering tuning

ADAM ROCKS AIR is the first Vauxhall to feature the all-new 1.0-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo three-cylinder engine. This high-tech unit raises the bar for three-cylinder engine refinement and packs 115PS, with impressive low-end torque of 170Nm from just 1800rpm.

State-of-the-art technologies include high-pressure direct fuel injection, an ultra-compact turbocharging system, continuously variable valve timing (intake and exhaust sides) and a switchable water pump.

Lightweight, all-aluminium construction, with a cylinder head-integrated exhaust manifold, contributes to low weight with the 1.0 ECOTEC tipping the scales at just 106kg.

Numerous ‘sound engineering’ measures also contribute to the engine’s benchmark refinement. These include an acoustically-developed cylinder block; a sump-mounted balancer shaft – unique for a 1.0-litre three-cylinder production engine; structural isolation of the fuel injection system and crankshaft; drive chains with inverted teeth and engine covers designed for acoustic attenuation.

Fuel-saving Start/Stop technology is an integral part of the system and offered as standard.

New Transmission

The new three-cylinder engine is mated to an all-new six-speed manual gearbox with a compact package design.

Called M1X internally, the new gearbox is distinguished by its improved efficiency and benchmark shift quality. Vauxhall engineers have achieved greater operating efficiency through optimally stepped gear ratios, a longer final drive ratio and low friction design for internal components. Weighing less than 40kg, the M1X is one of the lightest gearboxes on the market. It is also robust. With an impressive maximum torque rating of 220Nm, it is thoroughly engineered for hard work.

Performance

The new 1.0-litre ECOTEC capacity belies its strong performance. Top speed is 121mph with 0-60mph reached in just 9.9 seconds. A strong mid-range, particularly between 50 to 70mph, illustrates an abundance of torque, meaning that drivers needn’t rely on high revs to extract the most from the engine.

Despite the new 1.0-litre’s performance, it achieves 55.4mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emission of 119g/km. The new three-cylinder unit already complies with future Euro 6 emission standards.

The new 1.O-litre ECOTEC engine tops a powertrain portfolio including two current four-cylinder naturally-aspirated units comprising a 1.4-litre with 87PS and a 1.2-litre with 70PS.

The 1.4-litre unit provides maximum torque of 130Nm at 4,000 rpm and accelerates from 0- 60mph in just 12.5 seconds and has a top speed of 109mph. The 1.4-litre engine achieves 53.3mpg combined with CO2 emission of 125g/km.

The 1.2-litre registers 57.6mpg combined and 115g/km. Top speed is 103mph with a 0-60mph in 14.9 seconds.

Both engines are mated to five-speed manual transmission and can be specified with an ecoFLEX technology pack that further enhances their efficiency.

Chassis

The ADAM ROCKS AIR’s suspension system, McPherson struts on a sub-frame up front and a torsion beam at rear, has been modified to suit a wider range of use. The car’s off-road character is underlined by a 15mm increase in ride height compared into ADAM wearing identical 17-inch wheels, giving this mini crossover SUV-like ground clearance of around 14cm.

Modified or re-tuned chassis components include the dampers, springs, anti-roll bars, rear suspension geometry and steering.

ROCKS AIR’s rugged good looks are emphasised by wide front and rear tracks (1,472mm and 1,464 mm respectively) which, combined with a 2,311mm long wheelbase, also ensure a high level of driving stability and comfort. The ROCKS AIR can also be ordered with optional 18-inch wheels.

To cope with the demands of the urban driving, the ROCKS AIR’s electric power steering includes a special ‘CITY’ mode, which is easily activated at the press of a button. It increases power assistance at lower speeds to make manoeuvring in tight spots even easier.

CONNECTIVITY

  • IntelliLink infotainment system available for just £275
  • Enables seamless integration of Android and Apple iOS smartphone functionalities
  • USB and Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming and clever apps

Like its ADAM siblings, ROCKS AIR is one of the best connected small cars around thanks to its state-of-the-art IntelliLink infotainment system. Priced from just £275, it allows seamless integration of Android as well as Apple iOS smartphone functionalities into the car.

It provides USB and Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, a seven-inch high-definition colour touch-screen and seven speakers. Clever apps including BringGo, Stitcher and TuneIn can be downloaded.

The integration of Apple iOS devices into the system enables Siri Eyes Free voice control. This makes it possible for drivers to have incoming text messages read aloud and to dictate text messages or emails while they keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the steering wheel.

Hands-free phone calls can be made without dialling: the driver selects a name from the stored directory (with up to 1,000 contacts) visible on the touch-screen, touches the “call” function and then carries out a conversation via the car’s speakers. Telephone and audio functions together can be accessed and controlled via Bluetooth, irrespective of smartphone type.

Mobile mass storage devices, such as MP3 players, iPods, iPads, etc., can be connected to the infotainment system via USB or Bluetooth. In addition to the USB port, a 3.5-mm auxiliary input is also provided.

All this means ADAM ROCKS AIR drivers can select their favourite soundtracks using the touch-screen anytime and anywhere.

They can easily access personal photo galleries, slide shows, videos and other stored documents via the USB connection (and aux-in for videos for iOS Smartphones) for viewing when ROCKS AIR is stationary.

The standard infotainment equipment in ROCKS AIR is a CD 3.0 BT system, with radio and a MP3/WMA compatible CD player featuring Bluetooth and USB connections, as well as a hands-free function. The tuner can be combined with DAB digital radio, offered as standard, for a broad choice of listening options.

And for those who want the ultimate sound experience in their ROCKS AIR, an Infinity sound system is available for £300. It features eight speakers and a total of 315 watts with two tweeters, two front subwoofers, two rear wide band speakers, one mid-frequency range speaker and the sub-woofer box located in the trunk.

The BringGo navigation system can be downloaded as a map version for Eastern and Western Europe. Once downloaded, the map data remains installed on the user’s smartphone, which means ROCKS AIR owners do not need a smartphone broadband connection to use the BringGo navigation system. BringGo solely uses GPS to locate the ADAM ROCKS AIR. An additional advantage of the app is that it can be connected to internet search engines. If, for example, ROCKS AIR drivers want to find a restaurant or hotel, they can just run a name search on the search engine and the results will be automatically displayed on the BringGo map.

Stitcher is a useful global podcast internet radio which lets users listen to programs live or after they have been broadcast. Once Stitcher is downloaded onto a smartphone, ROCKS AIR owners can access more than 10,000 podcasts on demand, including radio shows and live stations around the world, via ROCKS AIR’ IntelliLink touch-screen.

With access to a global network of 70,000 radio stations, Tune-In has the power to offer entertainment to suit the tastes of every listener.

  • Hill Start Assist also available  as standard
  • Other options including Park Assist with Side Blind Spot Alert available

Standard on all ROCKS AIRs is Electric Power Steering (EPS) with a dedicated CITY mode. At the touch of a button, this function increases power assistance at lower speeds, particularly useful when manoeuvring in congested urban areas.

Hill Start Assist also comes as standard. It maintains the brake function for about two seconds after the driver has taken his/her foot off the brake pedal. This prevents ROCKS AIR from rolling back when starting on a slope or, when driving off from traffic lights or a parking spot on a hill.

Automatic Park Assist (APA) identifies spaces and automatically parks the vehicle, without the driver touching the wheel. The ultrasonic sensor-based system measures suitable parallel or perpendicular parking spots, calculates the vehicle’s trajectory and automatically steers ADAM ROCKS AIR into a parking space. The driver just controls acceleration, deceleration and gear shifting.

APA always comes with Side Blind Spot Alert, which also uses the ultrasonic sensors to warn the driver of an imminent collision when changing lanes. The sensors have a range of three meters to the left and right of the vehicle, and also detect objects or other vehicles in the driver’s ‘blind spots’.

Whenever another vehicle comes within range of the sensors, a warning LED illuminates in the relevant outside door mirror. If the driver still attempts to change lanes by using the turn indicator on the side where a vehicle is detected, the LED starts to flash. In this way, the system actively helps prevent accidents. The optional combined pack, comprising the up-level functionalities of Park Assist and Side Blind Spot Alert, is available for £450.
