The BMW 316i saloon was initially supplied with a 4-cylinder petrol engine generating maximum power of 105 hp. The BMW 316i saloon was given a completely new engine with VALVETRONIC during the revision in 2001. BMW was the first manufacturer in the world to present fully variable adjustment for the stroke of the inlet valves with this innovation. The new engine generated maximum power of 115 hp.
