AUDI A3, A3 SPORTBACK, A3 SPORTBACK G-TRON, A3 SEDAN AND A3 CABRIOLET
Audi demonstrates its technical competence in all aspects of carmaking with the Audi A3. Lightweight construction technology helps the premium compact car to a groundbreakingly low weight. The A3 1.4 TFSI has a curb weight of just 1,175 kilograms (2,590.43 lb) – the benchmark figure for its class. Its curb weight fell by up to 80 kilograms (176.37 lb). In the body, the primary factors for this weight reduction are the hot-shaped steels in the occupant cell and the aluminum bolt-on parts (engine hood and fenders).
Design and interior
Measuring 4.24 meters (13.91 ft) in length, the three-door model has a powerful road stance; the A3 Sportback is 4.31 meters (14.14 ft) long. It has a wheelbase of 2.60 meters (8.53 ft) (A3 Sportback: 2.63 meters [8.63 ft]), and the C-pillar slopes like that of a coupé. As an option, Audi will offer headlights in xenon plus technology, including LED daytime running lights; in this case, the tail lights will also feature LEDs. The optional all-LED headlights underscore the special position the A3 occupies in the compact segment.
The interior impresses with the visually lightweight instrument panel, the groundbreaking quality of the materials and workmanship, and the intuitively easy ergonomics. Particular highlights include the four round air vents, the elegant control panel for the standard air conditioning system and the finely rendered instruments and displays. Cargo capacity is 365 liters (12.89 cu ft) on the 3-door derivative and can be expanded to 1,100 liters (38.85 cu ft) by folding down the rear seats. On the A3 Sportback the same figures are 380 liters (13.42 cu ft) and 1,220 liters (43.08 cu ft) respectively.
One highlight in the A3 family is the power-retracting, 5.8 or 7-inch MMI monitor, which is just eleven millimeters (0.43 in) thick. The electromechanical parking brake creates room on the center tunnel console for the terminal of the optional MMI operating system. The top-of-the-line version MMI navigation plus with MMI touch features another innovation – the top of the round rotary pushbutton is a touchpad. Drivers can enter letters and digits with their finger, just like in the Audi full-size class.
Drivetrain
The engine lineup comprises nine four-cylinder units for the A3 and A3 Sportback respectively. They combine potent efficiency technologies – direct injection, turbocharging, innovative thermal management and the start-stop system. Fuel consumption has been reduced by roughly twelve percent on average compared with the previous model.
The A3 1.6 TDI ultra consumes on average just 3.2 liters of diesel/100 km (73.50 US mpg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 85 grams per kilometer (136.79 g/mile). Other highly efficient, low-emissions variants include the 1.2 TFSI with 77 kW (105 hp), the 1.4 TFSI with groundbreaking cylinder on demand (COD) technology and the 2.0 TDI clean diesel.

Data is transferred using the high-speed LTE standard. Audi is the first carmaker to completely integrate this standard into the automobile. The Audi phone box connects cell phones to the car in a convenient way; the sound system from Bang & Olufsen offers pure hi-fi enjoyment.
Audi A3 Sportback g-tron
Audi is taking a large step towards sustainable future mobility with the A3 Sportback g-tron. The five-door premium compact model can use climate-friendly Audi e-gas in addition to fossil natural gas. Its two tanks under the luggage compartment floor each hold roughly seven kilograms (15.43 lb) of gas at 200 bar of pressure. They reduce luggage capacity only slightly and are some 70 percent lighter than conventional steel cylinders.
Equipped with a 1.4 TFSI engine producing 81 kW (110 hp), the A3 Sportback g-tron sets standards with respect to efficiency and economy. Fuel costs to the customer are roughly four euros per 100 kilometers (62.14 miles). With its bivalent design, it has a range in the NEDC of over 400 kilometers (248.55 miles) on gas and an additional 900 kilometers (559.23 miles) on gasoline. Over 100 kilometers (62.14 miles), it uses on average less than 3.5 kilograms (7.72 lb) of natural gas or Audi e-gas – the fuel that Audi produces as part of its Audi e-gas project in Werlte, Germany, from CO2 and water using renewable power. Customers can refuel using an e-gas card, which serves as an accounting instrument.
Audi A3 Sedan
Audi is offering a sporty sedan in the compact premium segment for the first time. Thanks to the brand’s lightweight construction technology, the four-door model equipped with the 1.4 TFSI and S tronic has a curb weight of just 1,250 kilograms (2,755.78 lb). The third model in the A3 family also set standards with its engines and chassis.
The design of the 446-centimeter-long (14.63 ft) Audi A3 Sedan combines the classic three-box concept with the dynamics of a coupe. The flat roof ends in a C-pillar that flows smoothly into the shoulder of the body. The tornado line forms a stark shadow contour, and the fenders are strongly flared. The large, 425-liter (15.01 cu ft) trunk can be expanded by folding down the rear seat backs.
Audi supplies the A3 Sedan with powerful TFSI and TDI engines. They displace 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 liters and produce between 92 kW (125 hp) and 132 kW (180 hp). The cylinder-on-demand (COD) technology in the 1.4 TFSI developing 103 kW (140 hp) deactivates two cylinders at low load.

AUDI ULTRA BENEFITS NOW ALSO AVAILABLE IN A4 AND A5
At the pinnacle in terms of efficiency, the range of Audi ultra models which launched in the UK with the A6 last month is quickly expanding to include A4 Saloon and Avant and A5 Coupe variants. With CO2 outputs of as little as 109g/km the three new A4 and A5 TDI ultra models undercut the already impressively low emissions figures achieved by the familiar TDIe versions in each range. They are available to order now priced from £28,320 OTR and will reach their first UK customers in late April.
Although it shares its 163PS output with the more powerful of the two TDIe engines, which until now was reserved for the A5 Coupé, the unit powering the latest ultra models is a completely new development engineered for even leaner burning with no impact on performance. It works with a highly efficient Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system that removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust and ensures that the new models meet the stringent new Euro 6 emission standards.
Peak power arrives 1,200rpm earlier at 3,000rpm in the new ultra engine, and maximum torque increases from 380Nm to 400Nm and is available over a wider spread from 1,750rpm to 2,750rpm. Acceleration from rest to 62mph in the exclusively six-speed manual-equipped A5 TDI ultra is very slightly improved at 8.3 seconds (previously 8.4), and top speed holds firm at 140mph.
The same performance data also applies to the new A4 2.0 TDI ultra, and both also share identical, and exceptional, economy and emissions figures, with up to 56.5mpg possible according to the combined cycle test, delivered with CO2 emissions of just 109g/km. The A4 Avant is only just behind, with a 0-62mph time of 8.6 seconds, a top speed of 134mph, the potential for up to 55.4mpg and CO2 output of 114g/km.
BIK and VED benefits
The outstanding emissions performance delivered by the three new models has a bearing on their CO2-related Vehicle Excise Duty categorisation, which in the A4 Saloon and A5 Coupe is band B (A5 Coupe TDIe previously band C), and in the A4 Avant is band C. Ultra technology also facilitates exceptionally competitive running costs for business users, with benefit-in-kind liabilities of 16 per cent, 17 per cent and 16 per cent for the A4, A4 Avant and A5 Coupe respectively. If the A5 Coupé 2.0 TDI ultra SE is compared with the outgoing A5 Coupe 2.0 TDIe 163PS SE, the annual liability for a 40 per cent tax payer falls from £2,236 to £1,988.
Ultra badging at the rear discreetly marks out these extraordinarily focused models, which in all other respects closely resemble SE versions of the A4 and A5. A5 ultra Coupe models are available exclusively in SE form, while A4 and A4 Avant versions can also be upgraded to SE Technik specification.
A4 SE equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, an Audi Concert CD audio system incorporating DAB digital radio and linked to a 6.5-inch colour monitor, light and rain sensors, rear parking sensors and electronic climate control. A5 SE models also feature Milano leather upholstery.
SE Technik specification for the A4 adds Milano leather upholstery, along with additional features such as hard disk-based MMI Navigation plus, Audi Music Interface (AMI) iPod connection and the Audi Parking System Plus with front and rear sensors.
All A4 and A5 ultra models are equipped as standard with lowered sports suspension to reduce drag and maximise economy, and for the same reason the 18-inch alloy wheels normally included as part of the SE Technik upgrade for A4 models are omitted.
During this year ultra specification will become available for more models in the Audi range, starting with the five-door A5 Sportback.

The driver information system with rest recommendation is standard in the A5 Sportback. It detects if the driver is getting tired and issues an appropriate warning. Audi side assist, Audi active lane assist and adaptive cruise control are available as options. The latter uses radar to maintain a constant distance between this five-door model and the vehicle ahead. If the threat of a rear-end collision becomes imminent at speeds below 30 km/h (18.64 mph), adaptive cruise control will bring the car to a full stop.
The infotainment systems in the A5 Sportback are also top-of-the-line. The optional top unit is the MMI navigation plus, which can be combined with the Audi connect module including car phone online. The latter delivers attractive online services to the car and connects up to eight mobile devices to the Internet via WLAN.
Audi A5 Coupé
With its enticingly elegant lines, the Audi A5 Coupé is already a modern classic. It received the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2010. The two-door model also offers good everyday practicality. The rear hatch swings up automatically when unlatched, and the rear seatbacks can be folded down separately. Thanks to the lightweight body with aluminum front fenders, the curb weight of the base model is just 1,425 kilograms (3,141.59 lb).
The seven engines in the A5 Coupé cover a wide range. The ultra-modern direct injection units combine efficiency and sportiness in exemplary fashion. Even the 1.8 TFSI produces 125 kW (170 hp), while the 3.0 TFSI provides the top end of the power range with its 200 KW (272 hp).
Engine lineup:
– 1.8 TFSI with 125 kW (170 hp)
– 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI quattro with 165 kW (225 hp)
– 3.0 TFSI quattro with 200 kW (272 hp)
– 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TDI quattro with 130 kW (177 hp)
– 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp)
– 3.0 TDI quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)
– 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)
Depending on the engine, available transmissions include the six-speed manual, the multitronic and the seven-speed S tronic. The quattro lineup includes all of the engines starting with the 2.0 TDI with 130 kW (177 hp) except for the 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp). The sport differential is available as an option with the most powerful diesel and gasoline engines. Chassis options include dynamic steering and damper control. The standard electromechanical power steering reduces fuel consumption.
The list of standard and optional equipment is largely identical to that for the Audi A5 Sportback. The same is true for the driver assistance systems, infotainment and Audi connect services.
Audi A5 Cabriolet
Sporty, comfortable and stunning – the A5 Cabriolet is the open-top four-seater in the mid-size segment from Audi. Its fully automated, classic cloth top opens and closes in about 15 seconds. An acoustic top is available as an option. When opened, the top folds up into a small package that leaves 320 liters (11.30 cu ft) of luggage capacity in the trunk (380 liters [13.42 cu ft] when closed). The folding rear seat backs expand luggage capacity to 750 liters (26.49 cu ft).
A wind deflector and automatic belt feeds for the front seats underscore the comfortable character of the A5 Cabriolet; Audi offers heat-level heating as an option. A special coating for the likewise optional leather seats prevents their surfaces from heating up too much in the sun.
Reinforcements in the body of the open-top four-seater compensate for the loss of the fixed roof. Head-thorax-side airbags and aluminum plates that deploy automatically as rollover protection stand at the ready in the event of a crash. The Audi A5 Cabriolet strongly resembles the Sportback and the Coupé with respect to the chassis, ergonomics and equipment. The same applies to the drivetrain lineup, which includes front-wheel and quattro all-wheel drive, the manual transmission, multitronic and S tronic.
Engine lineup:
– 1.8 TFSI with 125 kW (170 hp)
– 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI quattro with 165 kW (225 hp)
– 3.0 TFSI quattro with 200 kW (272 hp)
– 2.0 TDI with 110 kW (150 hp)
– 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TDI quattro with 130 kW (177 hp)
– 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp)
– 3.0 TDI quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)
– 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro with 180 kW (245 hp)
